School pregnancy tests 'could lead to bullying'

Written by Liz Carnell

Offering girls pregnancy tests at Liverpool schools could stigmatise them and lead to bullying, claims an anti-bullying charity.

Bullybusters said schools would do better to point teenagers towards community based services outside school instead.

Survey on gay bullying in Irish schools

Written by Liz Carnell

Bullies in Irish schools are calling boys as young as 10 "gay" according to a University of Limerick survey of 2,000 parents.

Researchers found the taunts were made to boys whether they were gay or not and the more open they were about their feelings the more likely it was they would be targeted.

Three quarters of the parents surveyed at the 120 schools in the project said they would trust their sons' teachers to deal with homophobia in the classroom.

Schools in energy saving plan

Written by Liz Carnell

UK schools are being offered a smart meter to show how much energy they are using.

The move is part of a project to encourage schools to become carbon neutral by installing double glazing, insulation and turning off appliances instead of leaving them on stand-by.

Schools will also be expected to generate their own power with wind turbines, solar panels and woodchip boilers. The plan is to have 36 carbon neutral schools across the UK by 2016.

Hammer attack student loses court battle

Written by Liz Carnell
A student who suffered brain damage in an alleged racist attack on the tennis courts at his school has lost his High Court battle for compensation.
Henry Webster, now 18, was 14 at the time of the incident at Ridgeway School, Wroughton, near Swindon. He had been kicked, punched and hit with a claw hammer by a group of Asian pupils and young men, some of whom have since been prosecuted.
He had claimed that the school had been negligent and had failed to maintain proper discipline and deal with racial tension. The school denied liability.
Mr Justice Nicol said the school did not breach its duty to take reasonable care to keep Henry safe on the premises and that he and his family, who were also seeking compensation, had not been able to prove a link between the things the school did not do and his injuries.
