Attack fears keep 5m Afghan pupils at home

Written by Liz Carnell

Five million children in Afghanistan are not attending schools, some of them because their parents are afraid of attacks by militant groups.

President Hamid Karzai has pleaded with Taliban groups to stop their attacks which numbered 600 in 2009, according to the United Nations.

There are 13,500 schools in operation in Afghanistan, attended by eight million pupils, 40 per cent of whom are girls.

London pupils vow to look after each other to beat bullying

Written by Liz Carnell

Pupils at a London school have promised to look after each other to beat bullying.

The youngsters, at Oldfield Primary School, Greenford, have been working on a friendship project and deciding when teasing goes too far.

Each class has been working on ways of being a good friend and has drawn up special posters in a Be a Buddy not a Bully project.

"This is a great idea," said Bullying UK CEO John Carnell. "Lots of bullying starts off in a small way and recognising that it can get out of hand is the first and most important step towards stopping it."

Sexting a concern among Canadian teens

Written by Liz Carnell

Girls are using online media much faster than boys, according to a conference in Canada.

But at the same time, some under-age girls have been charged or threatened with legal action over child pornography affter posting provocative pictures of themselves on the internet. This is also known as sexting.

Researchers found that girls were more likely to use privacy settings on their social networking sites while boys were more likely to disclose personal information about their addresses and mobile phone numbers.
