80,000 badly behaved pupils suspended from English schools

Written by Liz Carnell

Children who attacked teachers or other pupils, or who were disruptive, were excluded from English schools on more than 80,000 occasions last year.

But the rate of permanent exclusions fell by 19.4 per cent in 2008-09.

Official figures show that more than 63,000 secondary school pupils were suspended for bad behaviour while 17,000 primary youngsters were excluded for a fixed period.

The statistics, from the Department of Education (DFE) showed that 320 pupils under 11  and 1,450 secondary pupils were expelled from school.

The most common reason for exclusion was persistent disruptive behaviour.

Merseyside teenagers tackle hate crime

Written by Liz Carnell

Teenagers on Merseyside have helped put together an education pack for schools to use to tackle hate crime.

They've been working with Project Triangle, run by Liverpool's Homotopia group and have won the support of Merseyside Police and teaching union the NUT.

The pack includes anti-bullying information and talks about the death of Michael Causer, who campaigners say was murdered in a homophobic attack.
