A report being released tomorrow is expected to say that teachers at English schools should investigate whether racism is an issue in every incident of bullying.

The recommendation is expected in a report into the events in which teenager Henry Webster suffered brain damage after being attacked with a hammer by an Asian gang at Ridgeway School, Wroughton, in Wiltshire. In 2008, the ringleader was jailed for eight years and 12 other people were convicted.

Edinburgh schools come up with bully beating ideas

Schools in Edinburgh could introduce "safe" rooms, suggestion boxes and listening posts for pupils in an attempt to curb bullying.

The plan would give pupils who need a refuge from bullies somewhere to go at break and is an attempt to come up with ideas to tackle the problem.

Scottish secondary schools have guidance teachers and listening posts would give them the opportunity to hear about pupils' problems first hand. Another idea is that listening posts could be run by members of school councils, giving youngsters the chance to talk to someone of their own age about bullying.

Some schools are already running successful anti-bullying schemes, including Dairy Primary whose head teacher David Fleming said stepping up supervision in the playground was helpful.

Edinburgh head teachers are also working on ways of combatting cyber bullying and that related to gay issues.

Cyber bullying is a real problem for many young people. Please click here to make a small donation to help us to help the families who rely on our advice and support.

Plans announced by the last government to make English schools record all bullying incidents may be scrapped by the new administration in a bid to save red tape.

Education Secretary Michael Gove says he wants to sweep away unnecessary rules which are taking teachers time and the measures may include scrapping the guidelines that urge schools to record all cases of bullying.

John Carnell, Bullying UK CEO, said that it was in schools' interests to record bullying incidents in a pupil's file so that they could show they were taking the problem seriously and putting measures in place to stop it.

"If schools keep a record then they can also see whether the action they have taken has been successful or not," he said.

A quarter of girls in Irish primary schools have been attacked by bullies in the previous three months.

But a study by Trinity College, Dublin, has revealed that boys are more likely to be the targets of violence with a third being kicked or hit over the same time period.

More than 5,500 children were surveyed and a quarter of older pupils said they had been the victim of lies or had rumours spread about them. Many of the targets of bullying were too afraid to report incidents to their parents.

John Carnell, Bullying UK CEO, said that parents who found their primary school age children were being bullied needed to contact their child's teacher immediately.

"Many instances can be nipped in the bud before they get out of hand," he said. "But if the class teacher isn't able to resolve the problem then parents need to make a written complaint to the head teacher."

Two weeks ago we announced that Bullying UK was in danger of closing unless funds of £50,000 could be raised to continue our work for the next year. Donations have fallen well short of what we needed, but we're pleased to say we have been contacted by a number of individuals and organisations looking to explore some very positive options with us.

We have decided to continue with our work for the next couple of months while we explore the range of possibilities we have open to us because our goal is to create a sustainable service that can continue helping parents and children across the UK.

Thanks to everyone for your fantastic messages of support and we hope to have more to tell you in the coming weeks.

A family who were sent abusive messages on the internet after their teenage son killed himself are calling for a new law to make such messages illegal.

Facebook tributes poured in for 15-year-old Tom Mullaney after he committed suicide in May. His friends said that he had been bullied at school in Birmingham.

A tribute site set up on Facebook was targeted with unpleasant and abusive messages and Tom's mum Tracy is calling for action to be taken to outlaw such comments which caused the family huge distress.

Bullying UK CEO John Carnell said that it was already against the law to use the phone system, which included the internet, to cause alarm or distress and that it could also be harassment which was a criminal offence.

"Something like one in five complaints we get are about cyberbullying and most of them are about Facebook so it's time the firm made it much easier to remove abuse. The police should also be prosecuting the culprits as that would send a message to other people that they couldn't get away with their disgusting behaviour."
