Pupils at a London school have promised to look after each other to beat bullying.

The youngsters, at Oldfield Primary School, Greenford, have been working on a friendship project and deciding when teasing goes too far.

Each class has been working on ways of being a good friend and has drawn up special posters in a Be a Buddy not a Bully project.

"This is a great idea," said Bullying UK CEO John Carnell. "Lots of bullying starts off in a small way and recognising that it can get out of hand is the first and most important step towards stopping it."

Up to 20 pupils are competing for every place at popular faith and grammar secondary schools.

The competition means that up to 100,000 children will miss out on their first choice of schools, particularly in areas like London and the south-east where parents are switching to state schools because the recession means they are finding it tough to pay private school fees.

Bullying UK is pleased that the trustees of the National Bullying Helpline have finally taken action over the CEO Christine Pratt's media remarks which were a breach of confidentiality and could have identified those people at No 10 Downing Street who had contacted her charity.

Contrary to the National Bullying Helpline trustees' remarks, Bullying UK is not in competition with the National Bullying Helpline which deals with workplace issues. We deal with school bullying!

Our concern is that people who contact any charity helpline expect confidentiality and we have had a number of emails from people saying as a result of Mrs Pratt's remarks they will never contact any charity helpline in future. This is very damaging to all charities which give advice to the public.

We hope that the Charity Commission will seek an injunction to prevent any National Bullying Helpline emails being passed to media publicist Max Clifford as this would...

Pupils from a Thamesmead school have been learning about the risks of social networking on the internet.
